Which Team will Win The Ashes 2022

Australia have a very strong recent record against England at home. They will be confident of retaining the Ashes but have no played a Test Match since January 2021.

England have to play at the top of their game across the series if they are to return home with the Ashes urn. The form of Joe Root and the return of Ben Stokes should give England hope.

Squad News

There are two uncapped players in the Australia squad with Michael Neser and Mitchell Swepson both hoping to make their Test debuts during the series. England’s 18-man squad has no uncapped players at Test level but they may well add some players from the England Lions squad who are providing warm-up opposition.

Australia Test Squad

Pat Cummins (c), Steve Smith (vc), Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Marcus Harris, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Michael Neser, Tim Paine (wk), Jhye Richardson, Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Swepson, David Warner

England Test Squad

The Ashes Key Players

  • Steve Smith (Australia)

The former captain has returned to the leadership group and been appointed vice-captain ahead of this Ashes series. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest batters of his generation, if not of all time, and has scored 27 centuries in 77 Tests. In 2021 his batting average is 75.75.

  • Marnus Labuschagne (Australia)

Labuschagne was not part of Australia’s initial squad for the 2019 Ashes series in England but forced his way into the reckoning after producing excellent form for Glamorgan in the County Championship. When Steve Smith suffered concussion at Lord’s, Labuschagne came into the side and has not looked back since. He averages 72.82 in Test matches since Lord’s 2019.

  • Nathan Lyon (Australia)

Affectionately nicknamed ‘Garry’ by his team-mates, the off-spinner has clocked up 100 Test appearances since his debut against Sri Lanka in Galle in September 2011. He is crucial to the side as he dries up the runs from his end and allows the pace bowlers to rotate from the other. Lyon is a very important part of the bowling attack, particularly in hot Australian conditions.

  • Joe Root (England)

If it was not for their captain, England would not have won 4 Tests so far in 2021. He bats at a good pace but without taking undue risks and is an expert at keeping his and the team’s score ticking along. His bowling has also developed this year and peaked with figures of 5-8 against India in Ahmedabad back in February.

  • Ben Stokes (England)

This will be Stokes’ second Ashes tour to Australia after he made his debut and scored a century in Perth during the 5-0 defeat in 2013-14. He then missed the 2017-18 series due to an off-field incident in Bristol the previous summer. However, he is second only to Joe Root in terms of his Test batting form in recent years and brings with him a never say die attitude.

  • James Anderson (England)

Anderson first appeared for England in an ODI during the 2002-3 Ashes tour. He has since been back in 2006-7, 2010-11, 2013-14 and 2017-18. Although his pace is not what it was in his early days, Anderson retains the ability to prize out top batters in any conditions. We do not expect him to play all five Tests, but he will be keen to take the field as much as possible and will be a real wicket taking threat when he plays.

Highest Run Scorer Australia

We are backing Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and David Warner as Australia’s top batters in the series. Smith and Warner have plenty of Ashes series experience and this series often brings out the best in them.

Highest Run Scorer England

Our batting tips for England are Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Dawid Malan. Stokes and Malan both have Ashes centuries in Australia already and Joe Root is in the batting form of his life.

Top Wicket Taker Australia

Australia have a talented, experienced bowling attack and we recommend Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood. Spinner Lyon is on 399 Test wickets and Josh Hazlewood is in the top-10 of the world rankings in all three formats.

Top Wicket Taker England

James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Jack Leach are our bowling picks for England. Broad missed a lot of the England summer through injury but relishes the heat of an Ashes battle.

Series Score Prediction

Although England have a very poor record in Australia, and have not won a Test Match in the country since 2011, we are backing them to win at least one game this time around. Australia lost their last series against India at home, are not invincibles and have a new inexperienced captain at the helm. Overall we are predicting Australia to win 3-2.

Series Betting Odds: Bet365

Australia to win the series: 1.33

Australia to win the series 3-2: 7.50

England to win the series: 5.00

England to win the series 3-2: 15.00

The Ashes 2022 Final Prediction

Back Australia to win the Ashes 3-2

About The Ashes

The latest Five Match Men’s Ashes series begins on December 8 at the Gabba, Brisbane. Australia are the current holders of the Ashes urn after winning the 2017-18 series 4-0 in Australia and drawing 2-2 in England in 2019. England have not won any Tests during the two most recent series in Australia in 2013-14 and 2017-18. Since 1987, England have won only one Ashes series in Australia.

Betting Tips

Steve Smith has averaged over 100 in both the 2017-18 series in Australia and the 2019 series in England. He is our pick for Australia’s highest run scorer in this series. Newly appointed captain Pat Cummins has finished as the top wicket taker in the last two Ashes series. In spite of the added pressure of captaincy, he is well worth backing as Australia’s top wicket taker against England across the five Tests.

England captain Joe Root has hit 6 Test centuries in 2021 including tons in Sri Lanka, India and England. He has only failed to convert a half-century on one occasion this year and is a strong choice for England’s highest run scorer in Australia. With the ball, no pace bowler in Test Match history has taken more wickets than James Anderson. At the age of 39 he is bowling with fantastic accuracy and is our tip for England’s top wicket taker in this series.

There are plenty of candidates from Australia and England for the Player of the series award with all-rounders Cameron Green and Ben Stokes both capable of producing outstanding performances with bat and ball. Overall we are predicting Steve Smith to take the Player of The Match Award.
